NDIS Speech Pathologist: Mobile Swallow Assessments & Mealtime Management Plans

Swallow Ability is a team of experienced Speech Pathologists who specialise in Dysphagia management, Swallow Assessments and Mealtime Management Plans. Our Speech Pathologists are mobile and visit NDIS and DSOA clients across the greater Melbourne area in Private homes, Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

Swallow Assessments and Mealtime Management plans aim to improve mealtime safety for clients with mild to severe dysphagia. We offer easy to follow Mealtime Plan and comprehensive staff training and education.

What is a Swallow Assessment and Mealtime Management Plan:

A swallow assessment is an observation based assessment where a trained speech pathologist observes a person eating and drinking and assesses for signs of Dysphagia, swallowing difficulties, risky eating or mealtime behaviours. Recommendations to assist with safe mealtimes are then made by the speech pathologists and set out in a document, this usually includes specific IDDIS diet codes as well as positioning, environment, assistance and supervision requirements. This documentation usually includes photos or pictures to support the recommendations. Staff supporting the person during mealtimes can follow these recommendations to maximise mealtime safety.

What is included in a Mealtime Management Plan:

  • Recommendations for safe swallowing strategies

  • Diet modifications

  • Signs to watch for that may indicate swallowing difficulties

  • When to contact a speech pathologist for reassessment

  • Recommendations for seating and positioning

  • Recommendations for food textures

  • Mealtime assistance techniques

Who we support:

Home-based swallow assessments and mealtime plans for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants and Disability Support for Older Australians (DSOA). We support children through to adults from 6 years+ who live within an hours drive of Melbourne’s CBD .

Our Speech Pathologist:

Speech Pathologists are trained to complete swallow assessments with and provide recommendations to people with dysphagia. Dysphagia is a term used to describe difficulty swallowing. Swallowing difficulties are often caused by physiological or anatomical changes to the head and neck.

How is the Swallow Assessment performed:

Swallow assessments are completed during the observation of a persons eating and drinking. Case history, goals of care and pre-assessment clinical observations such as cranial nerve function will inform the swallow assessment. These factors will also influence the post-assessment recommendations and planning, as each person’s individual situation is as different as their swallow function.

Support Staff and Family involvement:

Within the context of the NDIS and DSOA, care teams are often involved in swallow assessments. This is primarily because of the physical support that some people require to eat and drink. However, care teams are also often required to provide prompting and support to client’s with Intellectual impairments that may not understand the risks associated with their dysphagia.

Collectively the recommendations provided following a swallow assessment must align with participant goals, maximise swallow safety and consider the broader context of the meal to avoid potential risks.

Education:

The Speech Pathologist performing the assessment and completing the Mealtime Management plan and recommendations will provide education and training to support staff and family assisting with mealtimes. Each individual will have different mealtime recommendations and it’s important staff are well prepared to support the client.
